September 2008/ Volume 15

1. Provincial/ Aliwal North Community:

On the 16-17th of September in Aliwal North, members of the Province gathered for the second Provincial Assembly. Moreover, two guests attended this meeting in connection with the forthcoming Provincial Chapter: Srs Paula-Mary van der Walt OP and Biddy Rose Tiernan SND.

2. Pietermaritzburg International Students House (Dehon House):

During the winter break from the 30th of June to the 11th of July, our Pietermaritzburg community had a workshop at Port Shepstone. The workshop was about learning how to be a leader. It empowered the participants with the skills necessary to be leaders and to conduct workshops. The theme of the workshop was “A journey into Healing.” The objective of the workshop was to help the participants learn the necessary skills which they will need in their religious and priestly ministries. At the end of the workshop each participant was given a portfolio to complete as an exercise in learning how to conduct workshops. The portfolios were successfully completed and the participants were given certificates.

In July, for the first time the Pietermaritzburg community had a community retreat at Bluff. The retreat took place at the newly opened house of the Montebello Sisters. Fr. Ernest CMM was the retreat master. All the participants found the retreat spiritually enriching.

The very day when the aforementioned retreat started, Mr and Mrs Lux arrived in Pietermaritzburg. Richard Lux comes from the US province where he teaches at the SCJ Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners. He is on a teaching semester, at St. Joseph’s Theological Institute in Cedara. He gives lectures on the five Old Testament modules. Dr. Lux came with Mary, his wife, who supports him. The two are staying with the Pietermaritzburg community, which is quite happy to have them.

3. De Aar Community:

Mgrs. Alcaster stays in the bishop’s house. His recuperation from stroke was successful to such extend that some time ago he resumed taking care of two little communities of Britstown and Merriman. He is now dreaming about driving again but in the transport department for the time being he depends on the help of others.

4. Hilton Community:

Bishop Barry Wood officially communicated to the Provincial Fr. Peter Surdel, that from the beginning of July 2008, the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will take car of the parish of St. Francis in Pietermaritzburg. The Provincial Council has appointed Fr. Adam Musialek the parish priest of St. Francis, who will be working in collaboration with the formation team. He began his pastoral ministry on the 5th of July. Congratulations to Fr. Adam and to both the Hilton and  Pietermaritzburg communities.

On the 22nd of August, Fr. Adam Maslowski SCJ attended a meeting of the KZN Vocation Team, held at the Benedictine's house in Cedara.

On the 26-28th of September, Fr. Adam Maslowski SCJ conducted  a vocation workshop at our "Guest House" in Aliwal North. Brothers Joshua and Justin helped him with preparing and running it.
